Spurrier not in College Station

November 12, 2007 · 8 Comments

Where do these things get started? Today a high-powered alum from the University of Texas came up to me and said “you know who was playing golf in College Station the other day?” I replied, “my guess is, a lot of people.” “Yeah, Steve Spurrier.” This person is known to me to have certain connections. So I couldn’t dismiss the claim out of hand, but still I wondered. I do know there’s a nice golf course at Texas A&M.

So, I made 2 phone calls. Spurrier was not in College Station. Not in College Station. Not. What a move that would be, though. He could tell his AD, “no, I’m just going to play golf. What? They’re in the market for a new coach? I’m just going for golf.”

But he wasn’t there. I’m telling you this: you will hear Spurrier’s name. Quite often, probably. Ignore it. Disregard it. Pretend as though you don’t see it. It will amount to nothing.

Aggie powerbrokers met with superagent Jimmy Sexton this weekend. The initial interest from Spurrier wasn’t genuine. He wants leverage at South Carolina, so expect some public flirtation to take place as the Ags provide the necessary dog and pony show as a professional courtesy while quietly conducting their real search elsewhere.

The bottom line is that Darth Visor will not be roaming the sidelines of Kyle Field.

Why would we play his little game? Wouldn’t that be more embarrasing to make it appear we are interested, then he gets to give his, “I’m pulling out of the search to stay”….ie. we are second fiddle to South Carolina…..that would be dumb on our part.

Why would we play his game?

Because being on Sexton’s (and Spurrier’s) good side is very beneficial as we continue our search.

Private perception in the agent and coaching communities is much more important in this process than public perception among fans and the press.

I still think there is a chance we get Spurrier.

What do you know about Chris Peterson. Will he fit as the next Aggie Coach?
