Let’s start with Spurrier. I said earlier that he will not be the coach at Texas A&M. I stand by that. Is his name getting thrown around? Sure. The guy is making around $1.5M. If you were making half a million more than Guy Morris makes at Baylor, wouldn’t you get your name out there? Dream all you want to, but don’t get your hopes too high.
Speaking of Guy Morris, I hear he has contacted the Houston Texans about a possible spot. I wonder why he thinks the Texans may have some openings? Hmm…
Here’s what I’ve gathered on Rich Rodriguez. RichRod is concerned about letting his getting out there without some substance behind it. The reason? He flirted last off-season with Alabama. Coaches know that you can only do this stuff so many times before it starts to get old. Imagine having a coach that every off-season allows his name to be associated with the big openings. Even if you’re winning, you can start to wear out your welcome. Fans want to feel like you are committed to their school, and not just looking for a bigger paycheck. Bottom line is, if you start hearing RichRod’s name associated with a particular opening, you can feel pretty certain that he is serious about leaving. Not saying he’ll go, but just saying that he’s not just looking for more from WVU. My best guess after talking to some folks, RR will stay where he’s at. He’s has a pretty good gig, he’s a WVU alum, and he grew up right down the road from where he coaches. Not bad.

So you think Spurrier is floating his name around to demand a raise from South Carolina? My only problem with that is that he just did that less than a year ago when he signed an extension and got a $500,000/year raise as well. He signed it last December or January. So he’s going to go back to them 11 months later and demand yet another raise? He’s making $1.75 million/year, yes he’s under paid, but similar to your Rich Rodriguez analogy, he knows the routine will get very old, very quickly, and he can’t keep demanding $500,000 raises every 11-12 months.

1. I didn’t say Spurrier wouldn’t leave. I think initially he’d like some more money for SC. But I think he’d leave for the right place. I do not believe at all he will leave for Texas A&M.
2. Recognize the different positions that Spurrier and Rodriguez are in. RichRod is coaching at his alma mater. He’s not simply there because they are paying him. He loves it there. It is home. He has no interest in aggravating the AD or fan base.
Spurrier is different. It doesn’t really matter to him. SC isn’t home. He doesn’t love it. He likes it there, doesn’t mind coaching there, but he doesn’t love it there.
I do agree about Spurrier being unable to get raises every year. But while he’s making $1.5/year, expect him to give it a try.

Come on, aren’t you an A&M former student? Why the defeatist attitude? I assume you are thinking potential Tennessee, Arkansas or LSU openings are the only places he would consider? I would think, if he’s going to leave, he’s going to leave this year, and I think we’ll put together a better package than any of those teams…..does he really want to go to a 3rd SEC team? or live in Baton Rouge?

I agree with Eric that it would be hard to go to another SEC school team but that LSUgig would be a tough job to turn down.
If A&M can offer him soon and get him coming to CS before anyone officially knows whether Michigan will be looking for Les Miles then I think it can be done.

Eric, this guy isn’t Lopez. He doesn’t use the usual “Lopez-speak.” Lopez’s boilerplate for writing is to say “Then there was this….then there was that…then there was this guy….then there was that guy.”
Just yankin your chain JL (if that’s you).

Coachspeak you sound very confident that the ol’ ball coach isnt going to end up at Texas A&M. I would like you to share with us the reasons you feel this way. Besides the downside of being surrounded by recruiting giants LSU, UT, and OU; there is much A&M has to offer in facilities, fan and administrative support, and money.

Another Spurrier rumor: I ran into an old Ag today who claims to be friends with Gene Stallings. According to this guy, Stallings has had talks with Spurrier and Spurrier has indicated an interest in the job. AD Bill Byrne is nervous about hiring an unproven and the Board of Regents wants Spurrier, so Byrne is inclined to take the safe route and go after Spurrier. Who the hell knows?

You might have more credibility saying you don’t believe tOBC won’t leave SC, but to say he wouldn’t leave for A&M is just bull. A&M has so much more to offer tOBC, it’s not even funny.
tOBC can come in and get the talent he needs right away to start making runs for championships again. tOBC cannot stand losing, and he will always have 5+ losses while at SC.
A&M is a great opportunity for him to get out of the SEC but still be in a competitive conference where he can dominate once again.

It’s funny to listen to some the remarks about College Station. If it were the third world country people have made it out to be, why would anyone stay there once they got there? I suspect the comments reveal more about the poster’s emotions than they do about the actual environment of the city. College is what you make of it. I wouldn’t trade my time in CS for anything.

There have been a number of comments on other blogs. Houston Chronicle, SEC sites, etc. I suspect many of the comments are by t-sips, and people have never actually been to CS.
