Michigan may not be genuinely interested in him. I don’t know – because I don’t know anyone in Ann Arbor. I’m relaying what I’ve heard from a contact in New Orleans. And, like I said, I’m not sure I believe it. He was emphatic though.
Why not consider Michigan? Its not that Michigan is a bad job. Far from it. But everything is relative and you have to consider where Miles is now. He’s at a place that is already a power and where showing up to a Louisiana kid’s house with “LSU” on your shirt pretty much seals the deal. A little over 70% of LSU’s roster is made up of kids from Louisiana. And its pretty easy for LSU to recruit east Texas and the surrounding states. Another 15% of their players are from east Texas. Basically, the head coach of LSU will never have to work too hard to field a really talented squad.
Now, take a look at Michigan’s roster: you’ve got kids from Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania, California, Missouri, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, Arkansas, Iowa, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, Washington, Kansas, Louisiana, Colorado, Minnesota and Quebec. Only 42% of this year’s Wolverines are from the State of Michigan. And the rest of the roster came from places pretty well-scattered across the country. At first glance, you might think “Wow, recruiting at Michigan must be easy if they can get kids from all over the country”. But I guarantee you if Lloyd Carr and his coaches could field a championship caliber team by simply loading up on Michigan kids, they would. And they’d let someone else worry about catching the red-eye back to Detroit after making a recruiting visit to Colorado – where they had to act like best friends with a high-school coach they’d never met and pretend they really enjoyed the pot-pie the recruit’s mom served for dinner.
I think Les ought to stay put. I’m still trying to confirm what I heard with some other people.
