Revisiting Spurrier

November 18, 2007 · 25 Comments

Wow. I’ve gotten a lot of comments that I haven’t allowed to be posted because they appear to contain information that is from a pay site. But I do want to address the situation they bring up.

Let me make this much clear: If you were being told that Spurrier was close to being signed, sealed and delivered as Texas A&M’s next coach, you were lied to. That’s the plain and simple truth. LIES. I don’t know if someone is trying to sell more subscriptions the their site, of if they exaggerated what they had heard and hoped they would prove to be right, thereby scooping everyone else. But it doesn’t matter what the reason. The information was incorrect.

From what I can gather from the comments left, the story is that Spurrier was moments away from a deal when he decided to walk away because he didn’t feel like he had 100% support. What does that even mean? Support from who? It is rare that a head coach is hired who is unanimous choice by the AD and all the influential alum. Is it not support enough that you are offering the person millions of dollars a year to come coach their team. Come on! Wake up! These stories are false.

What’s great about the story being pushed is how would the subscribers ever disprove it? If they say Spurrier walked away, how would you, as the reader, be able to know if that was true, of if the story was made up and this was the out. You wouldn’t. The fact is, there isn’t much information to be obtained from the A&M side of this deal. Pretty much all of my information has come from the other side. For example, when I said Houston Nutt was checking to see if A&M had interest in him, and they didn’t, my information that they didn’t was coming from sources on the Nutt side, not on the A&M side. So it’s very difficult to believe that the folks at this particular website would be able to gather the details they claim to have gathered.

I guess it’s possible that the people who run this pay site are being deceived by someone who wants to feel like they are an influential part of the process.  Or maybe by someone or some group that wants Spurrier, and is trying to turn public opinion against A&M’s AD and whoever he eventually hires -make everyone think it’s Spurrier, so then when word starts coming out that Brian Kelly is the top choice, it feels like a letdown. (I just threw that name out there, by the way, so don’t jump on it). Or perhaps, like I said earlier, they are simply generating stories to get more subscribers.  It’s tough to believe that they were being fed a false story and didn’t know it. Or that they published it without trying to verify it. And now that the story needs to go away, it’s convenient that Spurrier just up and walked away.

I don’t know the reasons for it. But I will tell you that I have 100% confidence in a source I’ve gotten Spurrier information from for years. And it’s not anyone in the media, if you get what I’m saying. So I’m standing by my statement that Spurrier will not be the head coach at A&M next year.

Just think about what you read. Think critically if it matches up with things you know. For example, we’ve seen Bill Byrne make several coaching hires. Most notably, he’s hired 2 men’s basketball coaches, 1 women’s coach, and 1 baseball coach. Who was in charge of those hires? Who did the work? Who went to UTEP games and sat behind the bench to watch Billy Gillispie closely during a game? Now, do you really think that Byrne is going to sit by while others make the decision on the biggest hire of his career at A&M? A hire that will either cement his legacy, or get him fired? If you were in a similar situation in your profession, where a decision had to be made and you were going to get the blame if it went bad, would you just sit back and let others make the decision? I wouldn’t. If I’m taking the blame (especially to the extent that I would lose my job), then I’m making the decision.

Some have asked who I think the next coach will be. I will start addressing that this week. Honestly, it’s often easier to rule people out. But I will have some info for you on the names you should watch for.

    Thanks for the information.

FWIW, I don’t think there is/was anything deceitful going on with these paysites. In fact I think those that are reporting the information probably were hearing the things that they were – but whomever was talking to Spurrier’s agent for example was playing up their influence and decision making ability a bit much.

There may be some renegade alumni running around talking to coach’s agents but I think this is Byrne’s decision a the end of the day.

You might be correct but how can you prove your right. None of you bloggers can, so it seems like a mute point to show that someone else might be lying when you could be lying.

Weren’t you also adamant that Gillispie wasn’t leaving for Kentucky?

Okay, so you have blown some hot air that Spurrier isn’t coming which most of us already knew. Congrats on telling us what was obvious. Want a cookie? Now if you are so tied in, why do you share with us who the next coach is? Oh yea, you’ll share with us that info after everybody else has it. At least you could tell us who is on the short list. But you don’t have any better connections than most of us.

How’s that for some hot air? Fits well with this blog.

Davis and Sherman. Will go with those two since you don’t have a clue who it could be.

Any info on Tedford? That’s who I’m thinking it’s going to be.

Wow, you haven’t a clue as to what is going on. Go ahead and go on a limb but, umm, you are scratched off any credible source list. And trust me, I would know.

May not end up Spurrier, but not because he isn’t our #1 target today.

    1.Ok, I’ll trust you.
2.Where is the credible source master list kept? Is there an appeal process to get back on?
3.I find myself wondering why you read this site. It sounds like you have all the connections and don’t really need to read the internet to find out what’s going on. Please enlighten us.

    coachspeak,
Please just post a list of who YOU THINK it will be. All we have gotten is who it will NOT be. You can preface it with, “I don’t know for sure, but this is what I THINK”

  • JJ Bonham // November 19, 2007 at 7:38 pm | Reply

Don’t hold your breath Eric, he doesn’t know otherwise he would have already posted the list instead of his 7 paragraph rant on paysite information.

Since his sources on who it won’t be (which as you know is easier to ascertain but only if you “think critically”) are dead on, I will go out on a limb since coachspeak can’t. Being wrong could ruin this informative blog. However, at the same time you find out who the coach will be, rest assured, coachspeak will be typing furiously to take credit that he knew all along.

First, I was wrong on my previous post. So I am gong to make amends. Second, ultimately and without a doubt, BB will make the final decision. No surprise there. Here is the short list of candidates not made available on this blog:

1A) Spurrier – while most think he won’t come and give every credible source and reason why he won’t, there is an individual that used to be closely tied to the program that is the point man on this. Very influential and is a friend of SS. This deal is still in the works regardless of what the author of this blog thinks (and myself at one time – I apologize).

1B) Butch Davis – Give credit to coachspeak (did I just say that?), he did get it right on his Nov. 13th entry. He was queued up in 2005 for the job but the agreement on paying off DF couldn’t be ironed out. Leave it at that. His name is at the top as well.

    2) Sherman – ties to the university, support from the Texan coach, and a few big alums in Houston want him as well.

    3) Tedford – long shot at best. Not happy about the tree hugging idiots at Cal. Hard to build facilities when that is going on.

There’s the short list. Coachspeak, fire away. Just don’t take 7 paragraphs ripping me. It would be a waste of my time reading it as well as others.

    Coachspeak,

Any grumblings out of Cincinnati regarding Kelly and the A&M job?

  • jtn // November 19, 2007 at 9:55 pm | Reply

Why all the unnecessary hostility? The guy is reporting what he knows and believes. It’s embarrassing and silly to have a bunch of people deriding him for it, especially when you turn around and do exactly the same thing – post what you know and what you believe.

He’s not claiming to know everything; he’s reporting what he does know. He’s not offering to accurately predict the hire so you can call Vegas with his pick; he’s reporting what he knows. Are you suggesting he should post nothing if he can’t tell you everything?

As an Aggie, I’m happy to hear what folks are hearing, but I’m wise enough to know that no one knows precisely how this will play out. The suggestion that Spurrier won’t come to A&M is not a cheap shot at A&M; it’s one guy’s opinion based on what he knows from Spurrier’s side. Fine. Be reasonable and ease that chip off your shoulder(s).

Act like a grown up when you read something – use discernment in evaluating the veracity of the suggestions made, and discuss and debate like an adult. If it’s too difficult to do that without calling names unprovoked, feel free to not read what this guy writes.

I don’t understand why some of you people are getting upset. If you think he has no credibility why do you read the site? We’ll all know soon enough anyways. If you’re expecting something other than rumor before Byrne actually makes an official announcement, you are stupid and are kidding your self. It’s just for fun. If your g-string gets in a bunch over this stuff, then you’re taking it way to seriously. Just enjoy the ride, or stop looking at this stuff before $Bill’s announcement.

just because you don’t like what it says doesn’t mean it is wrong…

in a week or two spurrier may be HC at A&M and coachspeak will have to eat crow, but i think everyone should hold off on the attacks at least until we know how this plays out. even then, there is no reason for the hostility directed at someone who is merely trying to keep you informed to the best of his ability.

thanks for your efforts coachspeak, i look forward to the information you will share with us later this week.

    Eric -
I never said A&M was a crappy little school. In fact, I said that the reasons Spurrier won’t be at A&M don’t have much to do with A&M.
If you are looking at it on paper – money, facilities, support, etc. – I think most anyone would agree that A&M is better. But as I’ve said, that’s typically not all it’s about for most coaches.
